Pre-Monsoon Surge to Trigger Heavy Rainfall Across India from April 28–30
IMD issues multi-state alert for thunderstorms, gusty winds, lightning, and hail; weather to shift dramatically
Ananya soch: With the onset of the pre-monsoon season, weather patterns across India have begun to shift noticeably. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a widespread alert predicting heavy rainfall between April 28 and 30 in several parts of the country. The forecast also warns of thunderstorms, lightning, dust storms, and gusty winds, indicating an intense pre-monsoon phase.
After a strong monsoon in 2025, experts had anticipated a robust rainfall pattern for 2026 as well. However, recent reports suggest a possible influence of El Niño this year, which may impact rainfall distribution. Despite this, current pre-monsoon activity signals significant atmospheric changes.
Northwest India on Alert:
States including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall. Winds may reach speeds of 30–40 km/h, accompanied by thunderstorms and possible hailstorms in isolated areas.
Eastern and Central Regions:
Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha are expected to witness scattered to heavy rainfall. Strong winds (30–50 km/h), lightning, and dust storms could impact several districts.
Southern India to See Intense Showers:
Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh are forecast to receive significant rainfall with thunder activity and gusty winds.
Northeast and Western India:
Heavy rain is also expected across Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and other northeastern states. Meanwhile, parts of Maharashtra may experience intense rainfall and stormy conditions.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with weather advisories.
