Faith, Folklore & Satire Collide: ‘Dug Dug’ Backed by Bollywood’s Finest Set for India Release on May 8

Ananya soch: After winning hearts across prestigious international film festivals, filmmaker Ritwik Parekh’s comedy-mystery-satire Dug Dug is finally gearing up for its theatrical release in India on May 8. The film has garnered strong backing from some of the industry’s most influential voices, with Anurag Kashyap, Nikkhil Advani, Vikramaditya Motwane, and Vasan Bala joining as executive producers to bring the film to a wider audience.

A Strange Tale Rooted in Reality
Inspired by true events, Dug Dug unfolds in a rural setting where an unusual phenomenon takes over a village. After a man’s death, his motorcycle becomes the center of blind faith, with locals believing it possesses miraculous powers. People begin offering prayers and even alcohol to the bike, hoping their wishes will be fulfilled. As word spreads and coincidences fuel belief, this faith gradually transforms into a full-fledged commercialized religion—raising questions about belief, superstition, and societal behavior.

Trailer Launch Creates Buzz
The recently launched trailer, unveiled by the film’s executive producers, offers a captivating glimpse into this bizarre yet intriguing world. Opening with the line, “Who knows what games even God plays,” the trailer sets the tone for a narrative filled with mystery, humor, and thought-provoking satire. A missing bike, its mysterious return, and the events that follow create a gripping storyline that blurs the line between logic and belief.

Critical Acclaim at Global Festivals
The film had its world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival in 2021 and has since been showcased at major platforms including the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, and the International Film Festival of Kerala. Its unique storytelling and sharp commentary have earned widespread praise from critics and audiences alike.

Industry Stalwarts Praise the Film
Anurag Kashyap expressed his admiration, calling the film “surprising and brilliant in its storytelling, cinematography, and music,” adding that it deserved a theatrical release. Vikramaditya Motwane described it as “one of the finest debut films,” applauding its honest and humorous take on societal beliefs.

Nikkhil Advani highlighted the film’s authenticity, stating that its grounded yet entertaining narrative would resonate strongly with audiences. Meanwhile, Vasan Bala praised Parekh’s distinctive vision, emphasizing how the film presents reality through a unique cinematic lens without unnecessary exaggeration.

A Passion Project Comes Alive
Produced under the banner of Bottle Rocket Pictures by Prerna Parekh and Ritwik Parekh, Dug Dug will be released in India in collaboration with Flip Films, led by Ranjan Singh. The film features performances by Altaf Khan, Gaurav Soni, Yogendra Singh, and Durga Lal Saini.

Sharing his excitement, Ritwik Parekh said the film is meant to be experienced on the big screen. He expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support of filmmakers he has long admired, calling their association with the project deeply meaningful.

With its blend of humor, mystery, and social commentary, Dug Dug promises to be a refreshing cinematic experience that challenges perceptions while entertaining audiences.
