World Bank Approves $225 Million Project to Boost Rajasthan’s Road Connectivity

Ananya soch: In a major push towards infrastructure development, the World Bank has approved a $225 million (over ₹2,000 crore) Rajasthan State Highways Modernization Project. The decision, cleared by its Board of Executive Directors, aims to improve the efficiency, resilience, and safety of road networks across the state. The project will focus on upgrading and maintaining nearly 800 kilometers of selected state highways, benefiting over 3 million people with enhanced connectivity. Improved road infrastructure is expected to boost key sectors such as industry, mining, agriculture, and tourism, ultimately generating new employment opportunities.

Additionally, the initiative will help transform the Rajasthan State Highways Authority into a modern and service-oriented organization. Strengthening road safety management systems is also a core component, ensuring safer and more reliable travel for commuters.

Paul Procee, Acting Country Director of the World Bank in India, highlighted that better connectivity will enable youth to access jobs across various economic hubs. He emphasized that the project will significantly enhance Rajasthan’s industrial competitiveness while also giving a strong boost to tourism.

A notable feature of this project is the introduction of the “step-up loan” mechanism in India for the first time. The funding will be provided by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), with a maturity period of 35 years, including a grace period of five years.

This strategic investment is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening Rajasthan’s infrastructure backbone and accelerating its overall economic growth.
