Salman Khan Advertisement Case: Court Rejects Salman Khan, Rajshree Pan Masala Revision in Misleading Advertisement Case
Avinash. State Consumer Commission’s Key Decision
Ananya soch: Salman Khan Advertisement Case: (Consumer Court Jaipur) In a significant legal development in Jaipur, the State Consumer Commission has dismissed the revision petitions filed by Bollywood star Salman Khan and Rajshree Pan Masala in a case related to alleged misleading advertisements.
(Rajshree Pan Masala Case) The bench comprising Justice Devendra Kachhawaha, judicial member Arun Kumar Agrawal and member Liaqat Ali rejected the petitions challenging earlier orders of the District Consumer Commission (Jaipur-II). Those orders had directed restrictions on the promotion of Rajshree Pan Masala and required verification of Salman Khan’s signatures before a commissioner.
Commission Calls for Wider Consumer Protection Powers
While delivering its ruling, the commission observed that in a large country like India, limiting powers only to the Central Consumer Protection Authority in New Delhi may create confusion and delays in addressing misleading advertisements. It suggested that state consumer commissions should also be empowered to directly hear such cases. The complaint was originally filed by Yogendra Singh, who sought restrictions on the sale of Rajshree Pan Masala and requested that Salman Khan be restrained from endorsing the product through advertisements.
However, the commission noted that the complainant’s right to file the complaint is still pending before the district commission. Filing a petition before the state commission at this stage, it said, appeared to be an attempt to bypass the district forum. The commission also rejected arguments citing provisions of the Consumer Protection Act related to misleading advertisements, ruling that the revision petitions lacked merit. With this order, both petitions have been dismissed, keeping the matter pending before the district consumer forum.
