“Before Words, There Was Sound”: Pt. Salil Bhatt Unveils the Spiritual Essence of Music and Sanatan

Ananya soch:

Q1: How do you define the origin of music and existence?
A: According to Salil Bhatt, the origin of existence lies in sound. “Before words, there was swar (musical note), and before swar, there was naad (cosmic sound). This is the essence of Sanatan,” he explained. He emphasized the concept of Naad Brahma, describing music as the fundamental vibration that created the universe. For him, music is not merely an art form but the very energy that sustains life and creation.

Q2: Is music present within every individual?

A: Bhatt strongly believes that every human being carries innate rhythm and melody within. “Each person has sur and taal inside them, but most fail to recognize or nurture it,” he said. He encouraged people to awaken their inner potential through consistent practice and self-awareness. Ignoring one’s true abilities, he added, leads only to ignorance and missed opportunities for growth.

Q3: What role does the Guru-Shishya tradition play in your journey?

A: Giving full credit to his father and गुरु Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Bhatt highlighted the importance of the Guru-Shishya tradition. “Whatever I am today is because of my Guru’s blessings,” he stated. He described this tradition as the backbone of Indian classical music and a sacred path that nurtures discipline, humility, and spiritual growth. Carrying this legacy forward, he said, is both his duty and honor.

Q4: What inspired the creation of the Sattvik Veena?

A: Bhatt shared a deeply personal and spiritual story behind the creation of the Sattvik Veena. His son ‘Sattvik’ was born on the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri, which he considers a divine coincidence. Inspired by this moment, he conceptualized and created the instrument. “The Sattvik Veena is not just a musical instrument; it is an extension of spiritual consciousness,” he explained.

Q5: How does spirituality influence your personal and artistic life?

A: Spirituality is at the core of Bhatt’s life. He revealed that even his daughter’s name, ‘Satkriti,’ is derived from the thousand names of Lord Shiva, reflecting the deep spiritual roots of his family. For him, music and spirituality are inseparable—two expressions of the same divine flow. His journey as a musician is equally a journey inward.

Q6: What is the significance of Mahashivratri and the Shiva-Parvati union?

A: Bhatt described Mahashivratri as more than a religious festival—it is a symbol of cosmic balance. The union of Shiva and Parvati represents the harmony of energy and consciousness. “It reflects the deeper mysteries of the universe and the balance that sustains existence,” he noted, connecting mythology with universal philosophy.

Q7: What is your current life philosophy and direction?

A: Bhatt stated that his life is now fully devoted to the path of Sanatan and spiritual exploration. “The deeper I go into it, the more I realize how much remains to be understood,” he said. He views life as an infinite journey of learning, surrender, and discovery through music and meditation.
