Meta to Remove End-to-End Encryption from Instagram DMs
Ananya soch: In a major update affecting user privacy, Meta Platforms has announced that Instagram will discontinue End-to-End Encryption in Direct Messages after May 8, 2026.
The feature was introduced in 2023 as an optional opt-in tool for private messaging. However, according to Meta spokesperson Dina El-Kassaby Luce, only a small number of users enabled the feature.
What This Means for Users
After the deadline, encrypted chats will revert to standard messaging. Users are advised to download any important encrypted messages or media before the feature is removed.
Meta also suggested using WhatsApp, where end-to-end encryption is enabled by default.
Privacy Debate Rekindled
Privacy experts argue that removing E2EE could allow the platform to access messages for moderation or legal compliance, raising concerns about digital privacy.
